The Office of Development and Alumni Relations within the Swanson School of Engineering is responsible for development, alumni relations, and marketing. We handle special events, publications, the web site, and fundraising.

Matthew Weinstein, Ph.D
Senior Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations
Matthew Weinstein joined the Swanson School of Engineering in December 2008. Previously he was the Executive Director of Administration for Institutional Advancement and a member of the Vice Chancellor’s Senior Staff. Matt has extensive experience in development having been part of the fundraising operations at Brandeis University, Muhlenberg College, and the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley. In particular Matt has worked in the areas of major gift fundraising and planned giving. Matt is also a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his PhD in Political Science. His research was primarily focused on the relationship between state government and higher education. He has also earned degrees from Lehigh University, Clark University, and the London School of Economics.

Carey Anne Zucca
Director of Constituent Relations
Carey Anne Zucca joined the Swanson School of Engineering in March 2007. Her previous role working in the Marketing and Communications Department at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute combined with more than four years of experience working for SAE International has provided her with a solid foundation for success in development and alumni relations. Carey Anne has worked on such events as the annual gala benefiting Hillman Cancer Center, as well as SAE’s international Collegiate Design Series competitions which span nearly every engineering medium. She also has published several technical scientific and automotive articles, and offers a background in design for web and print media. Carey Anne received a BA in english at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a minor in communications media with a concentration in photography.

Mark Ziegenfuss
Director of Development

Mark Ziegenfuss joined the staff in September 2007 as Director of Development. Mark graduated from Robert Morris University with a BS in business administration. While attending college, Mark held various positions at Coca-Cola, starting with account manager and quickly becoming responsible for the execution of all Coca-Cola brands. Mark coordinated promotional activities, generated consumer marketing campaigns that drove gross profit dollars, and spearheaded academic fundraising initiatives including partnerships with local universities and school districts. He also worked on healthcare initiative fundraising involving multiple teaching hospitals such as Allegheny General Hospital and Children’s Hospital. Mark has a strong background in contractual agreements, ROI documentation, and delivering valuable execution of brand penetration and revenue growth that he looks forward to putting to use here at Pitt.

Butch Bryner
Director of Development
Butch Bryner joined the Swanson School of Engineering in February 2008. He most recently served as a Regional Director and the Associate Director of Development for the American Lung Association of Maryland working in events, corporate and foundation relations, grant management, and individual giving. Previously, Butch coordinated educational programs and promotional design for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. “I have always had a great desire to support higher education and welcome the opportunity to work with staff, faculty, and especially alumni who want to further enhance the programs and reputation of Pitt and the Swanson School of Engineering.” Butch holds a BA from Saint Vincent College where he first found interest in development and alumni relations and an MLA from Johns Hopkins University.

Don Shields
Director of Corporate Relations
Don Shields joined the Swanson School of Engineering in 2005. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Don was the Director of Development for the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University where he has was an integral part of the university team that generated more than $80 million in philanthropic investments and $85 million in corporate sponsored research funding for the College. He also established an integrated nationwide Advisory Council network to provide advice and advocacy for the College from a variety of key constituencies. Don received a BS in geosciences/biogeology from Penn State, a MS in geology from the University of Nebraska, and a Master of Public Management (MPM) from Carnegie Mellon.

Sonia Gill
Director of Marketing & Communications
Sonia Gill joined the University of Pittsburgh in 2004 to further enhance the marketing and communications efforts and build upon the strong brand identity of the Swanson School of Engineering. Prior to joining Pitt, Sonia worked as marketing coordinator for the Duquesne University Center for Environmental Research & Education for six years, during which she served as editor of a variety of print and web media. She was also responsible for elements of marketing planning, research, advertising, and public relations. Sonia also worked for MARC USA, one of Pittsburgh’s largest full-service advertising agencies, as an account executive. Her clients included national, regional, and local organizations that spanned the retail, academic, service, and non-profit sectors. Sonia holds a BA in communications and an MBA with a concentration in marketing and human resources, both earned at Duquesne University.

Teralyn Iscrupe
Associate Director of Marketing & Communications
Teralyn Iscrupe joined the Swanson School of Engineering in July 2007. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Teralyn worked at First Commonwealth Bank, where she developed and designed web articles and other publications for nearly 2,000 employees. Teralyn’s initiative in gathering employee feedback, analyzing web activity, and coordinating employee forums facilitated several internal communications programs. She received her BA in journalism with a dual major in communications media and a concentration in photography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Teralyn believes in catering to the needs of the individual reader and looks forward to producing web articles, newsletters, and e-newsletters for the Swanson School of Engineering.

Jennifer Welton
Annual Fund & Special Projects Coordinator
Jennifer
Welton began working in development at the Pitt Telefund where she
was one of the top fundraisers and a member of the committee to
create the Pitt Program Council Endowed Book Fund. Prior to joining
the Swanson School of Engineering as development assistant, Jennifer was
an annual fund assistant and worked on the Pitt Internal Campaign,
direct mail programs, and matching gifts coordination. "I enjoy
leaving work knowing that I either directly or indirectly helped
someone receive an education," she says. Jennifer received her BA in communications from the University of Pittsburgh in April 2007. As part of the team,
Jennifer assists with stewardship, purchasing, budgets, and Advance,
the internal alumni information system.

Monica Davis
Administrator
Monica Davis joined the Swanson School of Engineering in January of 2009. Prior to joining the Development and Alumni Relations Office, she was the administrative assistant and congress coordinator for The Latin American Studies Association (LASA). As part of LASA, Monica helped to plan an international congress to be held in Rio de Janeiro for approximately 6,000 people. Her Pitt career officially began in 2006 as administrative secretary in the Office of the Provost. She has also held student worker positions in both the Office of the Provost and the Biological Sciences Fiscal Office. Monica is a Pitt graduate with a BA in Language and Creative Expression. She is also working toward a second BA in Music and Theater.

Dave Robinson, Ph.D
Associate Director &
Technical Manager, Web Development
Dave works in the Marketing and Communications Team as well as the school’s Core I.T. Group, a unique situation that he believes provides a huge advantage to the services he can offer and tools he can leverage in his mission to provide a world class web development and electronic collaboration environment. Dave joined the Swanson School of Engineering in June 2009, following three years of postdoctoral medical researcher here at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He trained as a biomedical researcher, earning a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience from Cardiff University and a PhD in Neuroscience and Pharmacology from the University of Cambridge, and also worked for the pharmaceutical company GlaxoWellcome (and later GlaxoSmithKline). Despite this unconventional training for his current position, he has extensive experience in web development in both the academic and commercial sectors. Dave is always interested to hear ideas about how to improve the website and has set up a specific email address for this purpose: .
