Samuel Dickerson, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was a first place winner in the annual Big Idea Competition, sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence. He won Best New Product Idea for his idea of a low-cost, portable cytometer. A cytometer is a device for counting the number of cells in a fluid sample, such as blood. The mobile nature of the product would enable diagnostic tests, such as for AIDS, to occur more easily in rural medical clinics in developing countries. This product idea stems from his current research and his co-advisors are Professors Steven P. Levitan from ECE and Donald M. Chiarulli from Computer Science. Prof. Cheng’s proposal was one of only 14 proposal worldwide (among 144 proposals received from 24 countries, or < 10% acceptance rate) to receive Microsoft Research’s Cell Phone as a Platform for Healthcare award. Charles Jewart, PhD student under Prof. Kevin Peng Chen, received an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) award. This is an interdisciplinary graduate program in sustainable engineering offering a six month research residence in Brazil from the Mascaro Sustainability Initiative. Jun Yang has been awarded a 2008 NSF Career Award for her proposal CAREER-EHS: Thermal-Aware Scheduleing for Embedded Planar and 3D Chip Microprossesors. Graduate student Di Xu's research work is highlighted as the cover story of the July 21, 2008 issue of Applied Physics letters. Di's paper is titled Holographic fabrication of diamondlike photonic crystal template using two-dimensional diffractive optical elements. Di works with Dr. Kevin Chen. COE graduate Jeremy Herrman '07 and his start-up company Chogger were featured in the recent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article about AlphaLab in the South Side. Prof. Kevin Peng Chen has been awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Our congratulations go to Prof. Chen who is an expert in fiber optic sensors, radio isotope based micro power systems, and ultra-fast laser processing. EE senior Julie Kleinman was the recipient of the 2008 Swanson School of Engineering Alumni Student Leadership Award. Her award was presented by Dean Holder at the Distinguished Alumni Banquet March 20, 2008. ECE graduate student Michael Buric has been awarded an SPIE Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering. This $2500 scholarship is awarded to promising optical science and engineering students who are recognized as future leaders in the photonics field in the United States. SPIE is an international society advancing an interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light. A team of seniors (in alphabetical order: John Bennewitz (MEMS), José Bernardo (MEMS), Michael Chrin (ECE), and Adam Wick (MEMS)) have successfully competed in NASA’s Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program (RGSFOP). This represents the first time that University of Pittsburgh has been selected for this program. They will get to fly their experiment in the famous "vomit comet" this summer in order to test their hypotheses in a simulated zero gravity condition. The team did an extraordinary job of identifying a pertinent problem, researching relevant background information, designing the test rig, and conceiving the experimental design. Their efforts culminated with the creation of a 68-page proposal, which was reminiscent of a masters thesis. More information about their project can be found here. Graduate students Zsolt Poole and Di Xu's research work is highlighted as the cover story of the December 17, 2007 issue of Applied Physics letters. Zsolt and Di's paper titled "Holographic fabrication of three-dimensional orthorhombic and tetragonal photonic crystal templates using a diffractive optical element" demonstrates a novel method to construct three-dimensional nanostructrues using a single optical element. Both students work with Dr. Kevin Chen. Interviews from Gayatri Mehta and Swapna Dontharaju were highlighted on the front page of the DACeZine (Vol. 3, No. 1) which is circulated to a wide audience of design automation academia and industry. full article EDA can shine beyond IC borders, an article written by DAC Chairman and Professor Steve Levitan, was published in the EE Times May 28, 2007.
