Research Machine Shop

The Swanson School of Engineering Machine Shop provides students, faculty, and staff with the resources necessary to perform top-notch research and education. In addition to CAD/CAM capabilities, the full-service Machine Shop offers welding and computer-controlled lathe and milling machines for work on various types of materials.

The Machine Shop prepares prototypes and custom-designed parts for every department in the Swanson School of Engineering as well as other schools within the University and UPMC. Qualified students, faculty, and staff are permitted to work in the Machine Shop under the supervision of one of the three machinists, Bob Barr, Dan Lewis, or Scott Macpherson. Use of the Machine Shop is limited to the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
